Among all the Associate nations in this tournament, Nepal arguably boast the largest travelling fan base. Those passionate supporters are still left wondering what might have been had Nepal finished that thriller last Sunday — a result that would have lifted them well clear of their current position at the bottom of Group C.
Head coach Stuart Law has already cautioned his players about getting distracted by rising fan expectations and the noise on social media, especially now that Nepal find themselves in a must-win scenario. After being outplayed by Italy’s Mosca brothers, Nepal must quickly regroup as they prepare to face the table-toppers, the in-form West Indies cricket team.
Interestingly, Nepal had defeated West Indies 2-1 in Sharjah just a few months ago in their first-ever bilateral series. However, that West Indies side was missing several first-choice players. The current squad looks far stronger and has rediscovered its rhythm in this tournament after earlier series defeats against South Africa and Afghanistan.
For Nepal, this challenge may feel like climbing a mountain — but it is not without hope. Their victories in September, along with Zimbabwe’s recent example of upsetting Australia, show that batting first and applying scoreboard pressure could be an effective strategy against stronger opposition. So far in India, West Indies have not been tested in a chase.
Nepal may also draw confidence from their familiarity with the conditions at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Having been stationed solely in Mumbai, they understand the red-soil surface better than most. With this being a day game, Nepal may not mind batting first even if the toss does not favour them.
West Indies, meanwhile, appear to have few concerns. Their batters are clearing the ropes with ease, the pace attack is striking regularly, the spinners effectively choked England in the middle overs, and the fielding unit has been sharp. They will be eager to extend their winning streak and seal qualification for the Super Eights at the earliest opportunity.
