The 22nd edition of mega footballing event, the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar is all set to kick off from 20th November, 2022 in Qatar.
This will be the first FIFA World Cup hosted by a Arab nation and will be the second time that the FIFA World Cup is being hosted in Asia. Previously in 2022, South Korea and Japan jointly hosted the mega event for the first time in Asia which saw Brazil grab their 5th FIFA World Cup title.

Venues
The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be played in eight different venues in five different cities. The Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor will host the opening match between the host Qatar and Ecuador whereas, Lusail Iconic Stadium will host the final match on December 18.
Some of the details of all the venues are discussed below:
- Stadium 974: The stadium is located in Doha and has the capacity of around 40,000 spectators. Stadium 974 will host seven matches during the FIFA World Cup, with six group games and one Round of 16 knockout match.
- Al Thumama Stadium: Al Thumama Stadium is the second stadium from Doha and it has the capacity of 40,000 people. The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches along with a Round-of-16 match and one quarter-final.
- Khalifa International Stadium: Khalifa International Stadium is located in Al Rayyan and has the capacity of 45,416. The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches, one Round-of-16 game and the play-off for third place at Qatar 2022.
- Ahmad bin Ali Stadium: Ahmad bin Ali Stadium is second of three stadiums from Al Rayyan which has the capacity of 44,740. The stadium is set to host six matches in the group stage and one in the Round of 16.
- Al Bayt Stadium: Al Bayt Stadium is situated in Al Khor and has the capacity of 60,000. Al Bayt Stadium will host the opening match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, along with numerous other games, including one semi-final.
- Lusail Stadium: Lusail Stadium is located in Lusail and has the capacity of 80,000. Qatar’s biggest tournament venue (80,000 tournament capacity) will host the final, along with matches during every stage of Qatar 2022.
- Al Janoub Stadium: Al Janoub Stadium is only stadium from Al Wakrah which has the capacity of 40,000. The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches along with one Round-of-16 match.
- Education City Stadium: Education City Stadium is the third stadium from Al Rayyan which has the capacity of 45000. The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches along with a Round-of-16 game and one quarter-final.
Group Division in FIFA World Cup 2022
Alike the previous editions, there are total of 32 nations divided into eight groups of 4 teams each. top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16 and winner of respective rounds making it to the final.
The host Qatar are drawn in group A and will play the opening match against Ecuador.
This is the first time that six countries will be representing Asia in the FIFA World Cup. Similarly, 13 European teams will be part of 2022 FIFA World Cup whereas, 5 from Africa, 4 from North America and 4 from South America will vie for the global tournament.

Official Mascot
The tournament’s official mascot was unveiled on 1 April 2022, during the group stage draw. Its name is Laʼeeb, which is an Arabic word meaning “super-skilled player”.
Official Ball
The official match ball, the “Al Rihla”, was unveiled on 30 March 2022. It was mainly inspired by the culture, architecture, iconic boats and flag of Qatar. In Arabic, the word Al Rihla means “the journey”. The ball was designed with sustainability as a priority, making it the first ever official match ball created with water-based glues and inks.

FIFA has signed a broadcast deal with China Central Television (CCTV) to grant CCTV exclusive media rights in China for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Under this agreement, CCTV has acquired all media rights, across all platforms and including live, delay and highlights rights. CCTV is the major state and public broadcaster in China, the FIFA World Cup will be available for viewing on CCTV’s multiple channels as well as on various new media and mobile platforms (OTT).
